About Us

Carolina Hearing Doctors was founded in 2007 but is not new to the Winston-Salem & Clemmons area. The Clemmons office dates back to 2002 when Dr. Mills was partner in a regional Audiology practice. Dr. Mills purchased the Clemmons office in March 2007 and established Carolina Hearing Doctors. In April 2007 we opened an additional office in Winston-Salem.

We provide a truly unique experience where your hearing problem is corrected efficiently, comfortably, and professionally. Our unique approach is a direct result of Dr. Mills’ genuine interest in your personal needs and a lifelong interest in helping people communicate more effectively.

History & Education

Originally I am from Maryland and spent much time in both Maryland and our family home place in Arkansas.

  • In 1984 I graduated with a B.A. in Communication Disorders from Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. At this Christian college I gained a life focus of service to others.
  • Afterward I received a Master of Arts degree in Audiology from the University of Tennessee.
  • I practiced audiology for several years before returning to school to earn the Doctor of Audiology degree from the University of Florida, School of Health Sciences.

As an audiologist I have worked in two ear, nose, and throat physician practices and one specialty ear surgery practice. For several years I co-owned a private audiology practice before opening my own practice in 2007.

Affiliations

I hold licenses to practice 1) Audiology and 2) Hearing Aid Dispensing in North Carolina. I am a member of these professional organizations:

  • American Academy of Audiology (AAA)
  • AAA North Carolina Chapter – President, 2011-2013, for the professional organization that represents 550 audiologists in NC.
  • North Carolina Speech-Language-Hearing Association, Board Member
  • Audiologic Resource Association
  • Academy of Doctors of Audiology
  • American Hearing Aid Associates

My Philosophy

A good life and professional philosophy is found in this encouragement from the Bible. “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Philippians 2:3-4

My Interests

My wife Sue Ann is an important part of Carolina Hearing Doctors and helps me coordinate care for all of our patients. We have been married 25+ years and have three wonderful college age children who all show an interest in being in serving professions.

I am a deacon in our local church and help organize the mission activities within the congregation.  Since 2006 I have been on the board of directors for Carolina Bible Camp in Mocksville. I serve on the Advisory Board for the Department of Communication Disorders at Harding University, while Sue Ann and I also serve on the Presidents Council at Harding (located in Searcy, Arkansas).

I regularly make time for a camping and outdoor activities like kayaking and fishing. I enjoy weekend travel, reading, movies, and spending time with family.

My involvement with hearing blends well with my interest in audio electronics and my enjoyment of music.  I enjoy playing the guitar and also like other instruments like banjo and dobro.

Dr. Mills may be contacted at either office or at DrMills@CarolinaHearingDoctors.com.
